CHARACTER: Zacheus Osric Aleyne. NICKNAMES: Friends call him Zach; everyone else simply uses his surname. GENDER: Male. AGE & BIRTHDAY:31 32 & November 22nd.
GUILD: Fighters' Guild. JOB CLASS: Squire (14) → Archer (19). Joined the Valendian Rangers at 20. WEAPON: He's adept with regular bows and crossbows, but he's partial to the latter. His weapon of choice is the Night Killer: a crossbow that fires specialty bolts that contain a dose of blinding poison.
APPEARANCE: Tall, well-built, and solemn looking, Zacheus has quite the commanding presence. He stands at the respectable height of 6'1", with broad shoulders and a barrel chest. He has a ruddy complexion, a square jaw, and bright blue eyes. He keeps his dark blond hair short and he's almost always sporting some stubble or scruff. (He claims he doesn't have the time to shave every morning, but really it's because he looks about 15 years younger without it.) Zacheus can rarely be spotted without his trademark stoic expression; the man doesn't smile or laugh very often, which is pretty intimidating to those who don't know him very well. When he isn't donning his Ranger uniform, he wears very plain and simple clothing: dark cloaks, leather armor, gloves, and boots, etc. Beneath the clothes is a very impressive collection of scars he's amassed over the years from various beasts and assailants -- but those aren't on display very often.
PERSONALITY: Once upon a time, Zacheus Alleyne was an outgoing, friendly, and happy young man, eager and quick to smile. All that ended when his mother died. Now, he’s quiet, serious, with a face people half-jokingly suggest is fixed in a permanent frown. Those being generous would call him solemn and focused; those interested in being a bit more blunt would call him uptight and grim. No one would ever call him happy. There are a few friends that manage to catch glimpses of his old self, especially if someone gets him to loosen up (read: drunk). But for the most part, Zacheus is a stoic and solitary creature who spends his time working, worrying over his sister, and being a stick in the mud.
As a brother, member of the Fighter’s Guild, and Valendian Ranger, Zacheus takes all his responsibilities very seriously. He’s dependable, hardworking, and dedicated, always going above and beyond expectations. He doesn’t know how to half-ass something, and is doggedly stubborn and single-minded to the point that he often forgets to take care of himself when working or doing something for his little sister. Zacheus is take charge and follows orders to the letter, making him an exemplary Ranger. At the same time, there is little room for improvisation in the world of Zacheus Aleyne, and can be thrown when things don’t go by the book. He has all the traits of a good leader, but lacks the charisma to be one. He’s much better suited to the position of right hand man.
Unsurprisingly, Zacheus is emotionally distant to the point of being cold. He’s far from warm and approachable; in fact, he’s downright intimidating at times. He cares enormously about those that are dear to him, especially Lille, but he’s not the best at showing it. Zacheus certainly does his best to avoid heart-to-hearts and sentimental moments, and that, paired with the line he straddles between father figure and brother, complicates his relationship with younger sister. Zacheus isn’t a fatalist about everything, but he does tend to assume the worst when it comes to her -- he’s constantly worried something awful is going to happen to the girl, and he has no idea what he’d do without her.
As for religion, Zacheus isn’t the most devout Pharist. He regularly (and eagerly) attended services as a child, but his faith withered and died in the months following his mother’s death. He never prayed for her miraculous return from the grave, but he did pray for his father to get better -- to no avail. He still attends services every now and then, but it’s all very rote. Zacheus doesn’t know what he believes anymore.
HISTORY: Zacheus Aleyne was an only child for the first twelve years of his life. He was the young son of Lady Aleyne, a fierce knight, and her reserved & soft-spoken husband. Zacheus was a cautious and wary child, but he wasn’t quite so serious -- he smiled often, practiced sword fighting with his mother, and helped his father out around the house. The Aleynes didn’t adhere to strict gender roles, but they were still a picturesque family. Zacheus idolized his mother -- he wanted nothing more than to follow her into the Fighter’s Guild. He was no prodigy with a sword, that much was clear, but he had years to work at it.
When his father told Zacheus he was going to be an older brother, he didn’t worry too much about this new sibling dividing his parents’ attention. He was looking forward to having a younger brother or sister to look out for and play with -- as long as he didn’t have to change any diapers or clean up any vomit, he was fine! And Lille, of course, turned out to be an absolute dream; she was always smiling, always happy, and Zacheus fell into the role of protective older brother with ease. When he became a squire with the Fighter’s Guild at fourteen, things couldn’t have been going better for him.
Idyllic life came to a screeching halt when his mother was killed in battle. His father fell into a deep, relentless depression and never recovered. Lille was too young to really understand what was going on. Zacheus was crushed, of course, but when he realized his father wasn’t going to be fathering anyone anytime soon, Zacheus stepped up and became the main caretaker for both his sister and father. He swallowed his own grief and put on a brave face for his sister, doing all the domestic tasks that needed to be done so their father could rest. He learned how to cook, clean, sew, look after Lille, and do all the things his mother and father used to do. In the process, his happy and outgoing personality vanished, and Zacheus became a very solemn and uptight young man.
Between his squire duties, looking after his father, and taking care of Lille, teenage Zacheus had quite a full plate. He often called on his neighbors to help out when his sister when he couldn’t be around, usually due to the aforementioned squire duties. He served as a squire for an old friend of his mother’s -- Sir Osric, a knight that lived close to the Aleyne home. It was clear to Osric -- and everyone else, for that matter -- that Zacheus wasn’t much of a swordsman; his skills were serviceable at best. His marksmanship, on the other hand, was considerably more impressive. He was a little bulkier than the average archer, but he was still remarkably agile. Osric gave Zacheus his first bow and told him there was more than one way to live up to his mother’s legacy -- advice that’s stuck with him ever since.
For years, Zacheus hand waved his disinterest in girls by saying he didn’t have the time or energy to run around chasing skirts. It was believable enough; Zacheus kept himself so busy that he didn’t even spend much time with his friends. Over the years, however, it became increasingly clear that while he didn’t have enough time for girls, he certainly had enough time to feel attracted to other young men his age. After years of close companionship with one of the young sons of Sir Osric, their friendship advanced to something else altogether when the boy ended up kissing Zacheus. By this point, Zacheus had fallen into the unfortunate habit of compartmentalizing any serious issue he didn’t think he could afford to think about. He accepted his attraction to the same sex, but he had no interest in really dwelling on it -- he certainly didn’t want to talk about it with anyone.
At nineteen, Zacheus moved forward in the Fighters’ Guild, becoming a full-fledged archer. He was nothing more than an associate in the guild for the next year, opting to devote time to taking care of his baby sister. After a year, though, he found himself needing more to do. It was Sir Osric that suggested he look into the EKP or Valendian Rangers. Zacheus was torn between the two factions; working within the city would keep him close to Lille, but his skills made him a much better fit for the VR. In the end, he went with the Rangers, and it’s a decision he’s never regretted. Over the years, the overly serious Zacheus made a bit of a name for himself within the Rangers due to his talents and dependability. He apprehended outlaws, tracked and fought dangerous beasts, and knew the Outlands like the back of his hand.
When Lille told him she wanted to follow him (and their mother) into the Fighters’ Guild, Zacheus almost had a heart attack. His sweet and kind-hearted baby sister was clumsy and accident-prone; he was loath to let her use a paring knife, let alone allow her to handle swords and spears. The painful memory of their mother’s death resurfaced -- all he could think about was allowing Lille to join, only for her to fall in battle. In the end, he eventually relented. Lille was insistent and the idea of her trying to learn how to be a knight on her own was outright terrifying. The next few years were harrowing -- Zacheus came very, very close to pulling her out for fear she’d end up doing detrimental damage to herself. But no one was more proud when she eventually moved from squire to knight, just like their mother.
